Tramhuis — A Kiosk for City Walks

Tramhuis is a historic kiosk for city walks in the heart of Rotterdam. Originally built in 1914 as a waiting shelter for tram passengers, the small Art Nouveau structure has travelled across the city for more than a century, surviving the bombing of Rotterdam and repeatedly moving alongside the city’s reconstruction.

Today, carefully restored and returned to its place at Eendrachtsplein, the Tramhuis has found a new purpose. Once a place where people waited to move through the city, it now invites them to slow down, walk, and rediscover Rotterdam through stories, architecture, culture, and local perspectives.

The identity for Tramhuis grew from the building itself. By tracing the contours of the historic kiosk, the logo captures the recognizable corner shape of the house and sets it in motion, a small gesture that echoes both the movement of the tram and the experience of walking through the city.

Illustrations by Iris de Moüy bring warmth, colour, and a sense of curiosity to the identity. Together with a vibrant palette inspired by the many characters of Rotterdam, the system encourages people to slow down, look around, and discover the city with fresh attention. Each route received its own colour combination, creating a recognisable yet flexible visual language across the different walks.

For the typography, the clarity of Studio Feixen Sans is paired with the expressive tone of Affix. The combination balances readability with personality, creating a natural dialogue between type, illustration, and story.

The identity was translated across the full experience, from the website and podwalk app to the wider visual system surrounding the walks.
